What actually makes a kitchen modern
Modern is not the same as new. A brand-new kitchen with raised-panel doors and a granite counter is a traditional kitchen that was installed recently. These six things are what people are naming when they say modern.
Straight lines and flat planes
Geometric shapes, square edges, no moulding and no applied detail. If a shape is there for decoration rather than for a reason, it is not modern.
A short color list
Whites, grays and blacks, with at most one accent that repeats. Modern kitchens go wrong when a fourth color arrives late in the project.
Storage you cannot see
Deep drawers, a tall larder, an appliance garage. The look depends entirely on the counter being empty, so the storage has to be big enough that it stays empty.
